The following is an extract edited from an article in CONTACT - THE TEACHERS' DIGEST Issue 01 January 2011

NEw ways to love Singapore

Students have a fun time during their NE classes under the HAPIER (the Humanities, Aesthetics Programmes Integrated with English at Rosyth) programme where they are given more variety when learning about the history of
Singapore.

The school’s Primary 5 students, for example, learn about
Singapore’s first-generation  leaders such as Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, Dr Goh Keng Swee and Mr S. Rajaratnam, through English Language comprehension and cloze passage worksheets and a Manga Art programme.

Manga art is commonly used in Japanese comics and cartoons.

Students conduct research over the Internet and come up with charts and presentations detailing the career achievements and milestones of their assigned leader.

“This is done so that the drawing is more realistic and practical as the students would already have some prior knowledge of the person,” says Ms Evelyn Lem, one of the teachers in the HAPIER team.

Under the guidance of the school’s Resident Manga Educator, Ms Andrea Ling, students then design Manga-style characters of the first-generation leaders using tablets and design software during Art lessons. Four of the art pieces created by the students under Rosyth’s Manga Art programme were also featured in the Singapore HeritageFest 2008 patchwork, giving the works a greater reach than just the students’ peers.

The [school was] also awarded the Outstanding Development Award for National Education in 2010 for excelling in [its] NE efforts in imbuing students with a strong sense of national identity and social responsibility.

Besides learning about the history of
Singapore, students from [the school] also build up their confidence and improve on their social skills. Mr Raymond Bong in the HAPIER team, then Subject Head for National Education and Social Studies, says: “As this is a group project, the children learn how to critique each other. They also learn social skills and we feel that this is a more interesting way for the students to learn about Singapore's history.”

Some Useful Information About National Education

What is National Education?
National Education is about engaging hearts and minds. It is about developing a citizenry that is in tune with national issues – past, present and future. It is about appreciating how the nation came about, understanding the significance of the challenges we face and being actively involved in building the nation’s future.

The history of National Education

National Education efforts kicked off in 1997 in schools as the post-independence generation knew little of Singapore’s history, our struggles as a nation for both independence and survival and the values that have enabled us to succeed. National Education has actually been around since the 1970s, when the Singapore Armed Forces explained to its recruits and National Servicemen why we had to build up our own defence, the rationale behind National Service and what it is they were defending.

What is the Purpose of National Education?

National Education is part of a holistic education. It emphasises cultivating a sense of belonging and emotional rootedness to Singapore. NE aims to develop national cohesion, cultivate the instinct for survival as a nation and instil confidence in our nation's future in our students by:
- fostering a sense of identity, pride and self-respect as Singaporeans;
- knowing the
Singapore story -- how Singapore succeeded against the odds to become a nation;
- understanding Singapore's unique challenges, constraints and vulnerabilities, which make us different from other countries;
- by instilling the core values of our way of life, and the will to prevail, that ensures our continued success and well-being.

What are some National Education activities for schools?

Commemoration of Key Historical Events

Schools commemorate 4 core NE events which have been identified as defining moments in Singapore's history. The aim is to entrench these events and the images they evoke in the consciousness of each successive generation.

Learning Journeys

This programme enables students to visit various organisations to better understand how Singapore has overcome her constraints and to take pride in her achievements.

Community Involvement Programme

This programme aims to nurture pupils to be socially responsible and to help them understand that every Singaporean has a role in enhancing the well-being of the community and the country. It ensures that every student will be given an opportunity to be involved in community work. It is also hoped that this will spur some students to develop a life-long habit of community involvement.

NE Quiz

All students take an NE Quiz at the milestone levels of Primary 6 and Secondary 4. The unique feature of this Quiz is that it is administered in the form of a computer game where students will be tested on the basic facts about Singapore.

NE Show

All Primary 5 students are invited to attend the NE Show, which is a preview of the National Day Parade. The objective of is to evoke a sense of patriotism amongst the students and to impart to them the significance of National Day.
